ayimage.jpg (78586 bytes)Located 290 miles south of Alice Springs lies the world’s largest monolith – Uluru (Ayers Rock), one of Australia’s best known attractions.

Uluru was named "Ayers Rock" by European explorer Sir William Christy Goss who sighted it 1872. It was named by him for the South Australian premier of the time, Sir Henry Ayers. In 1995 the name of the National Park was changed from Ayres Rock-Mount Olga National Park to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park to acknowledge Anangu ownership and their relationship with the area.ayrestheres.jpg (202809 bytes)

The entrance to the park is at Yulara, a resort complex built in the 1970s specifically to cater for visitors to Ayers Rock and The Olgas.

Yulara is almost 450 km or a four and a half hour drive from Alice Springs. A flight takes 40 minutes.

Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), a dramatic series of 36 head-like rock formations, 34 miles south-west of Uluru by car, have a mystery of their own.
